The University of Freiburg is among the 100 best universities in the world: It is placed 84th on the current international “Times Higher Education Ranking 2015–16″.
The ranking evaluates 800 universities in the areas of teaching, research, citations, technology transfer, and internationalization. In the category “technology transfer,” which assesses the ratio between third-party funding from industry and the number of researchers, the University of Freiburg even achieved the best possible result in worldwide comparison. Freiburg also reached very respectable positions in the categories “research” and “teaching,” with 96 and 104, respectively.
“It is a testament to our strength overall that we have achieved outstanding positions across several categories,” says Professor Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, Rector of the University of Freiburg. “We are delighted that our accomplishments in research, technology transfer, and teaching are now reflected in one of the most important international university rankings.”
Among German universities, the University of Freiburg placed seventh overall. The ranking is based among other things on a worldwide survey of more than 11,000 scientists and on the citation impact of publications. It also takes into account statistics like the proportion of international students or the student–teacher ratio.
