In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Freiburg is organizing an emergency student relief fund. While the university has put measures in place — such as a delayed start date and the digitization of many courses — so that summer semester 2020 can proceed, we are also aware that the current situation poses new challenges for students. Many students at the University are experiencing financial difficulties as a result of the coronavirus pandemic which threatens their ability to continue their studies. The emergency student relief fund is intended to provide temporary support for students so they can continue their courses without interruption. Alumni support will be key to the success of this initiative, which is why we are reaching out to you. Friends of Freiburg University will also be organizing a #GivingTuesdayNow campaign for the emergency student relief fund on May 5, 2020, as part of the Global Day of Giving and Unity in response to the unprecedented need caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Who has been affected?
– Students who worked part-time jobs to finance their living expenses
– Students whose parents usually provide them with financial support, but are unable to do so because of their own financial losses
– Students who are studying abroad and unable to return to Freiburg

How will the emergency fund be used?
The university, in conjunction with the Studierendenwerk Freiburg, will advise students in financial need and provide support from the emergency fund. The fund will provide temporary relief until BAföG (federal student aid) applications are processed or new temporary part-time jobs can be arranged.
